Frequently Asked Questions

Can I award Karma to someone in my server manually?

Not at the moment. The Reto 2.0.0 update now prioritizes Server Karma over Global Karma, so a command could be introduced for Server Owners to manage their members' karma in the future.

How does Reto differ from the "Starboard" bot?

Both bots stumbled into the same problem: "Discord's Pinned Messages feature is great for showcasing the best a channel has to offer, but the 50-character limit is too restrictive", and took this into completely different directions.

  • In Starboard, anyone can use the ⭐ emoji to pin a message to a dedicated channel. Reto uses a Karma system: liking or disliking a message will increase or decrease the amount of Karma. If audiences were to disagree whether a message should appear in a #best-of channel, they can vote both positively and negatively.

  • On Reto, members with certain permissions (@Curator role, by default) can bypass audience vote and automatically pin messages with a dedicated Pin emoji.

  • Both of these features (Starboard community vote and role-locked reactions) are optional, and can be used in parallel, only one at a time, or disabled altogether.

  • Multiple Pin Channels can be created on any given Discord server. You could have a #worst-of channel to match the default #best-of one, if you wish.

  • More complex functionality can be implemented by modifying or creating your own Reactables.

As an addendum, the first version of Reto precedes the first iteration of Starboardarrow-up-right by a little under a year. Most users of Discord are familiar with the concept of a Starboard as a generic channel to send message highlights to, so the word is sometimes used generically to refer to channels managed by Pin Channels and Pin Thresholds.
